Tour Description

Full day tour in the charming medieval city of Siena and in the historic villages of Pienza and Montalcino. The duration of the tour is 12 hours with departure from Rome scheduled for 07.30 am

First Step

SIENA, located in the heart of Tuscany is one of the most beautiful medieval cities in Italy. You can visit Piazza del Campo, the main square of the city, with a particular “shell” shape, where the famous Palio is held, a passionate horse race that takes place every year, since 1600 AD. Palazzo Pubblico, which houses the Civic Museum with its masterpieces of Sienese art, Torre del Mangia, one of the symbols of the city, 102 meters high and built in the early fourteenth century (you can climb to the top and enjoy a unique view of all of Siena) and Fonte Gaia.

The Cathedral of Siena, wonderful Romanesque-Gothic cathedral. Inside the cathedral are preserved numerous masterpieces, such as the “floor”, which according to the definition of the famous Vasari: “the most beautiful, largest and most magnificent that had ever been made”.

The greatest sculptors of all ages have worked in the Cathedral: from Nicola Pisano who built the pulpit, to his son Giovanni, who designed the facade, from Donatello, of which the statue of the Baptist remains in the chapel of the same name, to Michelangelo who sculpted St. Peter and San Paolo, San Pio and Sant’Agostino for the Piccolomini altar, up to Gian Lorenzo Bernini whose art is witnessed by Mary Magdalene and San Girolamo in the Chapel of the Vow.

Second Step

MONTALCINO , a jewel of art and history nestled in the hills of the Val d’Orcia.

Also called the homeland of Brunello, because one of the most famous wines in the world was born in these lands: Brunello di Montalcino. The historic center of Montalcino is dominated by the mighty Fortress, built in 1361 the last bastion of the resistance of the Sienese Republic. The main square of Montalcino is Piazza del Popolo where the main building is located: Priori Place .

Third Step

PIENZA, a small village in the famous Val d’Orcia, defined as the “ideal city of the Renaissance”, was created by the great humanist Enea Silvio Piccolomini, who later became Pope Pius II. Here you can admire Piazza Pio II, the Duomo (which houses important and remarkable paintings by the most renowned artists of the time) and the imposing Palazzo Piccolomini, one of the most beautiful structures in Pienza and in all of Tuscany.

But Pienza is also “the city of cacio”, a very tasty cheese, made with sheep’s milk, very famous and really delicious. The village is full of small and charming shops that sell many varieties of pecorino, more or less seasoned, which you can taste along with many other typical local products, such as fabulous wines, spices, pici, honey etc …
